The results of the Fifth German Oral Health Study (DMS V) show how important the prevention of periodontitis and its early detection are for dental practices. Even though the prevalence of periodontitis has been falling for many years now - especially severe cases - one in two 35 to 44-year-olds in Germany is affected by this disease.\u00a0<\/span>43.4% have moderate periodontitis and around 10% have severe periodontitis. <\/span>In addition, inflammatory diseases of the periodontium increase with age. Between the ages of 65 and 74, 20% are already affected by severe periodontitis and by the age of 75, the proportion of people suffering from moderate or severe periodontitis is as high as 90%.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n [\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.20.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]<\/p>\n In view of demographic change and the \"shift of chronic oral diseases to an older age<\/i>\" (DMS V), a high prevalence and an increasing need for treatment can still be expected. Experts estimate that around 28 million adults in Germany require periodontal treatment. (Micheelis 2008). This contrasts with around one million periodontal treatments that were billed via the statutory health insurance funds in 2010 (KZBV Yearbook 2010). This means that only around 3 to 4% of those affected receive appropriate treatment.
