Why are diabetics particularly at risk from the coronavirus (CoV-2)?
According to current studies, the mucosa of the oral mucosa could be a main entry point for the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus into the body. This route of infection could explain why older diabetes patients in particular are more likely to suffer severe courses of COVID-19. In the authors' view, preventive measures for diabetes patients should therefore include the mouth and throat area; they generally advocate paying more attention to oral health and disinfection of this area in COVID-19 prevention concepts.
