Endocrinology
Your chance for hormonal balance and more energy
At the German Oral Health Foundation (DMS), we want to accompany you on your journey to a healthier, fitter life. Personalised prevention with functional biomarkers such as aMMP-8 plays a key role in maintaining your hormonal balance and strengthening your overall health. This is because chronic, silent inflammation in the oral cavity can affect the delicate balance of your hormonal system. Therefore, have your aMMP-8 level in your saliva measured regularly – at your specialist practice and at any OralFitness® dental centre
The aMMP-8 saliva screening
The aMMP-8 saliva screening measures the destruction of the extracellular matrix¹ and collagenolysis² in real time. Collagen is the most common structural protein in the human body. It strengthens the oral immune barrier by giving the oral mucosa structure and stability, thus making it more difficult for pathogens to penetrate. Damage to the oral mucosa allows inflammation and pathogens to enter the bloodstream, promoting systemic diseases. This is why prevention is so effective.

The endocrine system reacts very sensitively to inflammatory stimuli. Chronic inflammation in the oral cavity can therefore have far-reaching consequences:
- Thyroid gland: Inflammation in the body can affect thyroid function and exacerbate existing conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
- Stress hormones: Chronic inflammation puts strain on cortisol and adrenaline regulation, which can lead to fatigue, sleep problems or weight gain.
- Female hormone balance: Periodontal inflammation can play an additional role in PCOS, menstrual disorders or infertility – through its effects on insulin resistance and inflammatory mediators.
- Autoimmune processes: Inflammation in the oral cavity can exacerbate autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's or rheumatic diseases through bacterial reactions.
- Silent inflammations: They often manifest themselves in fatigue, weight gain, listlessness or loss of libido – without the cause being immediately apparent in the mouth.
What are the benefits of the aMMP-8 test for me as an endocrinology patient?
How does the test work?
The aMMP-8 test is quick, painless and does not require a blood sample. It is simply a saliva test – convenient and simple, carried out at the specialist's surgery. If the results are abnormal, a referral to a dentist is recommended. The test opens up new perspectives for interdisciplinary, personalised inflammatory medicine.
