Scientific studies indicate that a long-standing chronic inflammatory status of the periodontal tissue can be an independent risk factor for the development of cancer. For example, specific pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis have been shown to prevent cell apoptosis and thus promote the development of cancer - locally and remotely. Low-grade inflammatory processes in particular (low grade inflammation) are thought to be involved in cancer development (Aran 2016).
