How healthy are your heart patients' mouths?
Health begins in the mouth
Chronic inflammatory periodontal diseases are associated with the progression of cardiovascular diseases, as recent epidemiological studies have shown. One possible mechanism is the infiltration of oral/periodontal pathogens through the inflamed gingival epithelium and the release of proinflammatory cytokines into the bloodstream. There they trigger a cascade of inflammatory reactions that damage the cardiovascular system.
Numerous international studies have shown links between periodontal disease and
- Hypertension
- Atherosclerosis
- Heart attack and stroke
- Peripheral vascular diseases
- Heart failure and atrial fibrillation
- Metabolic syndrome
Possible complications
Is there a need for action?
Yes, in your patients with cardiovascular diseases and in patients with increased cardiovascular risks, because ...
- there is consistent and strong epidemiologic evidence that periodontitis is associated with an increased risk of future cardiovascular disease (Tonetti 2013).
- Men under the age of 50 with periodontitis have a 72% higher risk of developing coronary heart disease than their peers without periodontitis (Dhadse 2010).
- The severity and progression of cardiovascular disease can be negatively affected by chronic oral inflammation.
aMMP-8
Expanding prevention diagnostics with aMMP-8
A recent systematic analysis of clinical studies showed that periodontal treatment has a positive effect on some of the inflammatory parameters, including CRP, TNF-alpha and interleukin-6, which are considered markers for cardiovascular risk (Roca-Millan 2018).
A consensus panel of the EFP (European Federation of Periodontology) and AAP (American Academy of Periodontology) came to the conclusion that patients and doctors should be informed that periodontal therapy can prevent the onset or progression of cardiovascular disease (Tonetti 2013).
With the PerioSafe DR test, cardiologists and other specialists can now easily test their patients in the practice for active oral collagen degradation. As a check-up to identify patients at risk of periodontitis, PerioSafe DR is an ideal addition to the cardiology practice prevention program.
With PerioSafe
Advanced diagnostics with PerioSafe
- With PerioSafe DR, clinicians can detect active oral collagen degradation at a reversible stage, i.e. before the gums appear clinically conspicuous
- PerioSafe DR is particularly suitable for patients with a cardiovascular history and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
- PerioSafe DR is easy and reliable to use in the internal medicine practice (saliva sample)
Oral health is particularly important for:
- Patients with cardiovascular risks
- Patients with atherosclerosis
- Patients with heart failure
- Patients with peripheral vascular diseases
- Patients with a cardiovascular history, e.g. after a heart attack or stroke
- All patients who want to do more for their (oral) health as a preventive measure
What to do if the value is high?
In the event of a finding, a referral to a periodontist or specialist dentist for periodontology is advisable as part of an interdisciplinary collaboration. Patients should be informed about the risks of a possibly incipient or manifest chronic periodontal inflammation in connection with their individual health situation.
